Haliburton Highlands at a Glance
Situated between the raw beauty of Algonquin
Park and the cottage haven of Muskoka,
the Haliburton Highlands are an outdoor adventurer's paradise. Renowned for dense
forests, rolling hills and jagged rock faces, the area is a popular and challenging
destination for hikers, cross-country skiers, dogsledders and whitewater rafting
enthusiasts, and yet it still offers the warm, community-oriented hospitality
that Canadians have become famous for. Visit the Haliburton
Forest and Wildlife Reserve, which holds a wolf pack and the world's longest
tree canopy walkway, or listen to the excited yelps of dogsled teams as they vie
for Ontario's largest purse during the annual
races in the village of Haliburton.
The region also offers a chance to try the unique sport of luging at one of its
luge
tracks. Rockhounds and gemologists are lured by mineral wonders to Bancroft,
home of many explorable mines, a
mineral museum and the annual Rockhound
Gemboree. The scenic town is also home to a theatre
troupe and an excellent art
gallery.
